Being literate in a media age requires critical thinking and information seeking skills, to allow for thoughtful decision making. The overwhelming volume of information now available and the ease of accessibility require the ability to filter information successfully and use media wisely, in the classroom, home, workplace, or voting booth. This class will the explore effects of mass media (news, entertainment, and "infotainment") on individual and political behavior. We will reveal types of influences mass media exerts on societal issues. By studying a number of sources, students will be encouraged to analyze information for greater understanding, exploring all sides of an issue and form their own opinions as informed citizens.
