Ellsworth is known for residents who participate in campus and community activities as well as educational and social programs. All Ellsworth residents sign an agreement to participate in 3E, a career exploration program in which returning residents serve as mentors for first-year students. Together they explore career fields and related academic pursuits.

Ellsworth Hall features a mix of suite-style living and updated traditional 2-person rooms; each floor or "house" is named in honor of a distinguished faculty member, alumnus, or friend of the university. The second floor has a large laundry facility and boasts a "success center", complete with satellite campus office providing tutoring, advising, writing and composition help, and career counseling. All residents in KU Student Housing are eligible to use these services in Ellsworth.
