What is a LC?
The Learning Communities Program (LC's) is an innovative academic initiative designed for first-time freshmen, as well as upper-level students at KU.
Each LC is typically composed of a group of 20 students who are co-enrolled in two core courses and a seminar course that focus on a particular theme.
These courses fulfill requirements of majors and the professional schools. The LC Program invites students into small interactive learning groups with
faculty and staff, and includes interesting co-curricular events, such as speakers, cultural and social activities. LC's offer both residential and
non-residential options, creating enhanced academic support and opportunities for friendships.
What are the benefits?
By participating in LC's, students become involved in a living-learning community that helps them transition to college by providing:
- key interaction with faculty, which improves student retention and academic success;
- a small community of peers with similar academic interests who take paired courses together;
- a Peer Educator who serves as a mentor and resource for academic questions and concerns;
- a supportive network of other students, peer educators, and professors.
Academic Support
LC students:
- participate in study groups;
- attend out-of-class functions with their professors;
- engage in discussions related to the academic theme;
- are provided supplemental programming that assists in learning; and
- are connected to a peer educator that helps students find resources to improve academic success.
Residential LCs
Students participating in a residential LC will live on the same floor with the other participants of their LC. The PE will live on the residence hall floor with the LC members and create study groups, bonding activities and provide opportunities for out-of-class learning. LCs without designated housing
Students in LCs without designated housing may live on or off-campus. Each LC has a Peer Educator (PE), an undergraduate student who helps students make the adjustment to college and assists with the LC Seminar. The PE will set up meeting times and locations for study groups and socials.
